2017 Year End Special

Well this is where the road will come to an end for this blog. Kinda fitting it is also the year end post for 2017. I was going to storm off back in November when the Alt-18 was cut to Alt-8. Since I realized there was only 8 weeks left in the year, I figured to just ride along and save the final post for the year-end. After all, this was just one of many weird things to happen in this bizarre year. From President Trump, to a 28-3 blown lead in the Super Bowl, a bunch of weather disasters, the worst shooting in the history of the country, hockey in Vegas, the Astros winning the World Series for Houston, sexual scandals against big names, and the loss of fellow Alternative rockers Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington. This has truly been one of the weirdest years ever, but let's focus on the Alternative world, which was one of the bright spots. For this being the year-end post, I beefed it up for a third straight year in some way.

Before we get to the Alt-36 here are what the past two weeks would have looked like on the Alt-(1)8 (positions determined by Airplay, only debuts are getting reviewed).

Alt-(1)8 12/23

Dropouts:
Two Feet-Go Fuck Yourself (#7)
St. Vincent-Los Ageless (#5)
Missio-Everybody Gets High (#4)

The Alt-(1)8:
18. Bastille-World Gone Mad (#2)
17. Joywave-Doubt (DEBUT)
16. Dashboard Confessional-We Fight (#18)
15. New Politics-Color Green (DEBUT)
14. Imagine Dragons-Whatever It Takes (DEBUT)
13. Mansionair-Astronaut (Something About Your Love) (#8)
12. Alice Merton-No Roots (#17)
11. Lovelytheband-Broken (#3)
10. Walk the Moon-One Foot (#16)

6. Arcade Fire-Creature Comfort (#1)
5. AJR/Rivers Cuomo-Sober Up (#6)
4. Portugal. The Man-Live in the Moment (#12)
3. Nothing but Thieves-Sorry (#10)
2. Foster the People-Sit Next to Me (#11)
1. Sir Sly-&Run (#9) (4)

Welcome to the Alt-(1)8:
3 debuts this week, and the first is Joywave's Doubt. I really like how this song is sounding even though I have not listened to it much. Bit surprised that it was not the lead single off Content (It's A Trip) since it might be their best song off the album.

New Politics finally broke through this year with Color Green. It is a little slow compared to other songs from them, including One of Us which should have been on earlier this year. I think it might do well next year.

Of course we got another song from Imagine Dragons. Whatever It Takes is the third song off the Evolve album, and while I do not think it is as good as Believer, it is way better than Thunder. This song is about how you can get success no matter what is in your way. I can see this song in the top 8 in 2018.

Alt-(1)8 12/30

Dropouts:
Bastille-World Gone Mad (#18)
Joywave-Doubt (#17)

4. Portugal. The Man-Live in the Moment (#4)
3. Foster the People-Sit Next to Me (#2)
2. Sir Sly-&Run (#1)
1. Nothing but Thieves-Sorry (#3) (New #1)

Welcome to the Alt-(1)8:
3 debuts and a rejoin for the final week of 2017, our first debut is Neighbourhood's Scary Love. I like this better than 24/7 but it's not as good as the retro Neighbourhood songs. Scary Love has some vintage sounds throughout the song that can be enjoyed by anyone. I would like to see this go in the top 8 soon.

Kimbra is back after 5 years with Top of the World. Her song talks about how she brokethrough back in 2012 when she teamed up with Gotye on Somebody That I Used to Know, but never really got the credit. She will not stop at anything to get the fame she desires. I actually was not a big fan of this song, but it is starting to grow on me a little bit.

St. Vincent's Los Ageless is getting a second go on the Alt-(1)8 this week after missing out last week. Let's see if another top 5 run is in store.

Our last debut is from the Wombats. Turn was more of an unexpected song from them especially since I thought Lemon to a Knife Fight would debut first. It's pretty good after a couple of listens, but I have not listened enough to write a full review. Could very well be a future #1.

Now for a special bonus: The countdowns from two other channels that I listen to as well as the Session list from Alt Nation.

38. Walk the Moon-One Foot (15 Weeks, Peak #5)
37. Beck-Up All Night (16 Weeks, Peak #6)

And now the moment you have been waiting for... THE ALT-36 OF 2017!!!

36. Arcade Fire-Everything Now (16 Weeks, Peak #4)
We start off with Arcade Fire's title track. I am a bit surprised that this song is much lower than I anticipated, just barely making the list. I really enjoyed this song during the summer and later on. This is the first of two Arcade Fire songs that are on the Alt-36.

35. Lorde-Green Light (11 Weeks, Peak #2)
Lorde came back onto the music atmosphere by making an amazing album. Green Light was the lead single off Melodrama and debuted here back on March 18th. I said it was Lorde's best single to date and I am still backing up my claim.

34. Milky Chance-Cocoon (12 Weeks, Peak #6)*
Milky Chance has charted 3 songs on the Alt-18 and all 3 made the Alt-36 Year end at some point. Cocoon was no exception, except it was the lowest ranked of the three. I kinda expected Cocoon to chart around this region and I was right. I felt that this song could have done better earlier this year.

33. Marian Hill-Down (14 Weeks, Peak #3)
Probably the biggest sleeper of the Alternative world in 2017, no thanks to being one of two songs to chart on here that aired on Apple commercial, Marian Hill's Down surprised me a bit at how well it did not only here, but on Billboard as well. It even appeared on the Hot 100 of 2017. I am glad that Marian Hill found success in 2017 and will be looking forward to hear more from them.

32. Banners-Someone to You (14 Weeks, Peak #6)
Oh thank you Alt Nation for putting this on here. Michael Nelson made this gem that perfectly aligned with my year and how I felt alone. Someone to You was a great song to listen to late in the summer and in the fall and it lasted longer than I thought it would.

31. Sofi Tukker/Nervo/The Knocks/Alisa Ueno-Best Friend (8 Weeks, Peak #2)
The other song that Apple featured on a commercial, Best Friend is literally about this collaboration of artists. This was one of the songs that made me think of the old Boombox Radio show from a while ago. I like this more than I did back in October, but I still think too much is going on with this song.

30. Bleachers-Don't Take the Money (14 Weeks, Peak #6)
Jack Antonoff strikes again! Bleachers is heavily underated in my opinion and more people need to give Jack more credit for what he has done in the music industry. Not only is he a great singer, he also has written many songs for other artists including Lorde. You might also hear Lorde during the last chorus.

29. Foster the People-Sit Next to Me (19 Weeks, Peak #2)
This is the first of two songs that Foster the People have brought to the Alt-36 and I thought this one would have been the higher one. I have enjoyed Sit Next to Me so much that I thought it would crossover like Pumped Up Kicks did. It didn't but it had a great run on the Alt-(1)8.

28. Imagine Dragons-Believer (14 Weeks, Peak #3)
Billboard named Believer the Alternative Song of 2017, and I don't blame them, although I thought it would have gone to a song yet to be revealed on this list. Imagine Dragons was a force in the music world not just on Alternative, but all over, scoring two top 10's on the Hot 100, including this one. Glad to see some song on here do well in the mainstream.

27. Judah & the Lion-Suit & Jacket (10 Weeks, Peak #7)
So yeah, back when I said that this was going to be song of the year in May, yeah that didn't even come close. Still Suit & Jacket got on here after disappointing me in the summer by only going as high as #7 (it debuted at #8). Judah & the Lion was also on last year's Alt-36 when Take It All Back was #21.

26. Sylvan Esso-Radio (13 Weeks, Peak #7)
One of two Sylvan Esso songs to crack the top 18 and this one was  a vast improvement over their material a few years ago. Radio was a fun tune that could not get out of my head, especially early in the year. This was on XMU's Top 41 last year charting at #17 and it was the first song to debut this year. I don't know about you but I was a slave to Sylvan Esso's Radio.

25. Phoenix-J Boy (14 Weeks, Peak #4)
Phoenix brought another great song that made the year end list, this time J Boy flew in under the radar. Probably because it debuted at #11 the same week that a song debuted at #10 (you will see that later on). J Boy was also done during a session earlier this year. However I am a bit surprised that it was the only song from Ti Amo to chart so far.

24. K.Flay-Blood in the Cut (10 Weeks, Peak #1)*
Feels like this should have been higher especially considering how well K.Flay did with Blood in the Cut as her debut single. Although this song is from 2016, it was a feel good story of this year coming out of nowhere to take the top spot on the second week of the year. Unfortunately High Enough was a far cry from this, but Giver was enough to rebound. Both are chasing the glory that Blood in the Cut had this year.

23. Muse-Dig Down (14 Weeks, Peak #5)
I'll be honest here, Dig Down probably should have been a number one song at some point, but it felt like it lacked something other Muse songs have had in the past. I still enjoyed it during the summer, but I expected more from them, like an album to follow this.

22. Glass Animals-Youth (7 Weeks, Peak #5)*
It was going to be either this, Pork Soda, or Agnes but Youth gets the edge for going to #5 I'm guessing. This marks the fourth straight year Glass Animals has had a song in the top 36 so they are essentially regulars to Alt Nation now. Youth was a nice mellow song to listen to and while I still think Life Itself is their best song (#5 last year) this one also has done enough to be their #2 best.

21. Missio-Middle Fingers (14 Weeks, Peak #1)
Ah yes, the song that crashed the blog back in January. Regan sure found a gem in Missio back when nobody knew who they were. Now they're powers in the rotation and this was the first chapter in their success story. Middle Fingers was one of my favorite songs from this past year just because it was basically the anti-mainstream feel that I got from it. It just made me want to keep on throwing middle fingers to everyone who tells me what I should be like.

20. The National-The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness (15 Weeks, Peak #6)
This was SiriusXMU's top song of the year, and I don't blame them. The National finally got the recognition they long deserved with System. It was clearly their best song in 7 years and one that I keep playing on my piano and guitar over and over again. Seriously if you have not heard this song yet, listen to it and you will not have it escape your head. I'm glad this got put at 20 because I was concerned Alt Nation might not have had this on the Alt-36.

19. Portugal. The Man-Live in the Moment (16 Weeks, Peak #2)
Nearing the halfway point and we reach the first of two Portugal. The Man songs. While this was obviously the lesser of the two, Live in the Moment was a great song that I think debuted too late. Had it been a little earlier we might have had PTM twice in the top 18. Either way, taking the 19 spot is great for a band that has had major success, but I'll get to these guys again a little later.

18. Coin-I Don't Wanna Dance (12 Weeks, Peak #10)
I am shocked that this made the top 36, especially the top 18. I completely forgot about I Don't Wanna Dance so I had to listen to it again to remember it. Probably because it was a shadow of what Talk Too Much and Run was the past two years. Hard to believe that only 17 songs were ranked higher.

17. Nothing but Thieves-Sorry (16 Weeks, Peak #1)
This song is still charting on my version of the Alt-(1)8 and it has done very well considering how well Trip Switch did in 2015. Sorry somehow exceeded that to become the best song Nothing but Thieves have brought to the Alt-(1)8!

16. Alice Merton-No Roots (18 Weeks, Peak #2)
One of the biggest surprises this year came from Alice Merton, whose No Roots literally came out of nowhere to debut very high and reach #2 late in the year. This song was big in Germany and now SiriusXM think Alice Merton will be an artist to watch in the  upcoming year. Looking forward to hearing more from Alice.

15. Sylvan Esso-Die Young (11 Weeks, Peak #6)
I wonder if Madison brought this song to #15 because there is no way this should be this high, especially ahead of Radio. I do not know what is worse, the fact that Die Young is 15 (and 5 on XMU) or that we can only find 14 (or 4) songs better than this in 2017.

14. Foster the People-Doing It for the Money (15 Weeks, Peak #5)
The second of two Foster the People songs on the Alt-36, this one along with Phoenix's J Boy debuted really high in late April (same week). Foster the People took a more soulful turn with Doing It for the Money as well as on the album Sacred Hearts Club. While it was a far cry from Torches, this was still one of my favorite albums from this past year.

13. Bastille-Send Them Off! (12 Weeks, Peak #1)*
While Blame was more successful on other stations, Send Them Off was dominating early in the year, having the top spot for two of the weeks. Send Them Off was not like a typical Bastille song, it surely was one of their best songs they have brought on here. The song almost describes another one of Bastille's songs Pompeii which became the band's breakthrough hit back in 2013, when it was the song of the year.

12. Sir Sly-&Run (15 Weeks, Peak #1)
This was the only song to top both countdown formats at some point. &Run captivated what was a very successful year for Sir Sly, with this being their first #1 as well as what High has done. While &Run sounded like an experiment for a new sound, it turned out well enough that we might see a new formula for how Sir Sly writes their songs.

11. Arcade Fire-Creature Comfort (7 Weeks, Peak #1)
Talk about a late blossom, this song debuted late November, only took 3 weeks to get to #1 and it went all the way to #11 on the year end. This was the biggest surprise of the year end list. I wasn't sure if Creature Comfort was going to make the list let alone be ahead of Everything Now, but here it is almost in the top 10 after being #1 for three weeks. Don't know if it will be on here in 2018, but we'll see.

10. The Revivalists-Wish I Knew You (15 Weeks, Peak #1)
I actually heard Wish I Knew You on Spectrum's top 20 of 2016, so I knew of this song well before it debuted here in January. I did not think it would have the same success here, but lo and behold it hit #1 in April. The Revivalists probably deserved more than one week at #1 but this song capped an amazing year for them. It even crossed over to Hits 1, but with not much success there.

9. Alt J-In Cold Blood (24 Weeks, Peak #2)
This and the next song should have been #1 at some point in the year, but was hit by the Feel It Still roadblock every week. In Cold Blood was the best thing that Alt J ever made and was probably my personal favorite song of 2017. I just wanted this to be #1 so bad especially after all those weeks at #2. Hell I thought this would be #2 just for that.

8. Sir Sly-High (19 Weeks, Peak #2)
Along with In Cold Blood, High also ran into Feel It Still for multiple weeks preventing it from hitting the top spot. Although Sir Sly found more success with &Run, High was their better song during 2017. I do not know how you can not dance to this or how this did not hit #1, but man was this a fun tune.

7. The XX-On Hold (16 Weeks, Peak #1)*
While the XX has been on here before, normally with not much success, On Hold helped get them to where they deserved, a top spot on the Alt-18 back in January and February. On Hold was also a force last year on XMU being #15 on the top 41 last year.
While I thought I Dare You was better, this song was too good not to pass up on after what happened earlier in the year.

6. Young the Giant-Silvertongue (15 Weeks, Peak #1)*
After coming in at #2 last year with Something to Believe In, Young the Giant proved to have another great song from the Home of the Strange album with Silvertongue. This was also the highest of any song to also chart in 2016 as well. Silvertongue was Young the Giant's fourth #1 out of 8 possible songs to appear here.

5. Cold War Kids-Love is Mystical (17 Weeks, Peak #1)
We knew that after the success of First (the 2015 song of the year) it was a matter of time until Cold War Kids would go to the top spot again. Love is Mystical was another big hit for Cold War Kids, scoring the top spot back in April and holding it for four weeks. The LA Divine album also had some other good songs that just missed out here, including So Tied Up with Bishop Briggs.

4. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (24 Weeks, Peak #1)
Missio scored an unexpected #1 with Middle Fingers, then when Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea came along, it established them as an Alt Nation powerhouse. This song lasted longer at the top spot and along with In Cold Blood, spent the most time on the Alt-(1)8 in 2017 at 24 weeks. Really looking forward to hearing more from Missio later on, especially if Everybody Gets High does well in 2018.

3. Manchester Orchestra-The Gold (23 Weeks, Peak #1)
Oh man we are at the top 3 and let's talk about Manchester Orchestra's top song The Gold. Back in 2009, Manchester Orchestra had the first #1 on the Alt-18 with I've Got Friends. In 2017, The Gold was the penultimate #1 song in the Alt-18 era before it switched to Alt-8 (Sir Sly-&Run was the final #1). The Gold was also the top in-studio song of 2017.

2. The Killers-The Man (19 Weeks, Peak #1)
Brandon Flowers and company stormed back in 2017 to produce their biggest song in quite some time. Hard to believe that with all their success in the Alternative world it took them this long to find it here. The Man gave the Killers a long deserved #1 spot that they held on for 6 weeks. On any other year, this would be the song of the year, but it's 2017 so...

1. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (22 Weeks, Peak #1)
"What? Feel It Still is the song of the year? I am shocked"-no one ever. Yes, this is the culmination of what we figured out since May, the Alt-36 was going to be the coronation of Portugal. The Man's Feel It Still for song of the year. I mean how could it not. 12 weeks at #1 here (Record), 20 weeks at #1 on Billboard Alternative (Record), probably has the record on the Spectrum, year end #1 on Spectrum, somehow #3 on Billboard's Year End Alternative (behind Believer and Wish I Knew You), Top 10 on the Hot 100 at some point, crossed on over to Hits 1, and cracked Billboard's Year End top 100 overall. Not many alternative songs, not even Pumped Up Kicks found all that success in one calendar year. This #1 is well deserved. Congratulations to Portugal. The Man for producing the song of 2017 as well as to everyone else that charted here. And that is how this four year journey will come to an end. Thank you so much for following along through good times and bad, through songs like Feel It Still, Genghis Khan, First, and Dangerous, DJ's like Regan, Madison, Justin Kade, KyleAEW, Redman, and if you want to go back farther, Jake Fogelnest. This has been a fun time, but I'm going to stop now to proceed with other opportunities in life. I might stop back if I have the time. So long everyone!

Alt-(1)8 Week of 12/16/17 (Arcade Fire (3))

So there is a new Star Wars out right now, the Last Jedi. I have not seen it, but I did hear it could be the best one since Empire Strikes Back. Now do not put spoilers in the comments since I still want to see it sometime.

Dropouts:
Yungblud-I Love You, Will You Marry Me (#15)
Manchester Orchestra-The Gold (#13) (4)
Sofi Tukker/Nervo/The Knocks/Alisa Ueno-Best Friend (#8)
Awolnation-Passion (#7)

The Alt-(1)8:
18. Dashboard Confessional-We Fight (DEBUT)
17. Alice Merton-No Roots (#17)
16. Walk the Moon-One Foot (#14)
15. The Killers-Run For Cover (#16)
14. Beck-Up All Night (#18)
13. K.Flay-Giver (#5)
12. Portugal. The Man-Live in the Moment (#11)
11. Foster the People-Sit Next to Me (#10)
10. Nothing but Thieves-Sorry (#9)
9. Sir Sly-&Run (#2)
8. Mansionair-Astronaut (Something About Your Love) (REJOIN)
7. Two Feet-Go Fuck Yourself (#12)
6. AJR/Rivers Cuomo-Sober Up (#4)
5. St. Vincent-Los Ageless (#6)
4. Missio-Everybody Gets High (#3)
3. Lovelytheband-Broken (DEBUT)
2. Bastille-World Gone Mad (REJOIN)
1. Arcade Fire-Creature Comfort (#1) (3)

Welcome to the Alt-(1)8:
2 debuts and 2 rejoins this week, our first debut is from Dashboard Confessional. I did not know they were still around and here they are out of nowhere with We Fight. I really like how this song is meant to motivate someone and to unite together to find the alternative way (pun intended). Also nice to have some emo rock on here since we have had a lack of it recently. I hope this is big... next year.

Mansionair brings Astronaut (Something About Your Love) back on after only being on for a week. Glad it came back since it had been close the past few weeks.

We could eventually have a debut at #1 if we got one at #3. Lovelytheband just broke a record for highest debut ever on the Alt-(1)8 with Broken. I can't believe this is a debut a 3. What a perfect song to be there. I have enjoyed this since it first came on Advanced Placement months ago. It's a great song if you and a close friend are down and need a good pick me up. I hope this goes #1... next year.

Same could be said for rejoins, as Bastille's World Gone Mad storms all the way back to #2! Let this be #1... next year.

Notes:
Talk about big drops to end the year. Sir Sly takes a 7 spot drop for &Run and K.Flay's Giver falls 8 spots.

So much for Missio going 3 for 3 this year. Everybody Gets High could still be #1... next year.

Any chance that Two Feet could be here to stay in 2018? I said the same for Yungblud and look what happened.

So guess what? This is the final Alt-(1)8 of the year 2017. Next week the Alt-36 of 2017 (yes this did not get tampered) will come out with the session list the following week. I will probably not be posting either list until the final week since I am going to be busy visiting family over Christmas. This Alt-36 could be a great one, but it might the most predictable one ever. What do you think will be #1? Fire Escape? Blood in the Cut? Send Them Off? On Hold? Silvertongue? Middle Fingers? Wish I Knew You? Love is Mystical? Feel It Still (hint it's probably this one)? Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea? The Man? The Gold? &Run? Creature Comfort? There is only one way to find out, and that is to listen next week! I am also putting a poll up to see what the blog's favorite songs are.

My Top 5:
Bastille-World Gone Mad
Lovelytheband-Broken
Missio-Everybody Gets High
St. Vincent-Los Ageless
Walk the Moon-One Foot

Alt-(1)8 Week of 12/9/17 (Arcade Fire (2))

Well, we have only a couple weeks left in 2017, so the year end special is starting to stabilize more now. We also have only 16 days left till Christmas, and this Alt-18 looks like a giant Christmas tree.

Dropouts:
Bastille-World Gone Mad (#5)

The Alt-(1)8:
18. Beck-Up All Night (#15)
17. Alice Merton-No Roots (#12)
16. The Killers-Run For Cover (#14)
15. Yungblud-I Love You, Will You Marry Me (#4)
14. Walk the Moon-One Foot (#17)
13. Manchester Orchestra-The Gold (#10)
12. Two Feet-Go Fuck Yourself (#11)
11. Portugal. The Man-Live in the Moment (#13)
10. Foster the People-Sit Next to Me (#9)
9. Nothing but Thieves-Sorry (#7)
8. Sofi Tukker/Nervo/The Knocks/Alisa Ueno-Best Friend (#6)
7. Awolnation-Passion (REJOIN)
6. St. Vincent-Los Ageless (#18)
5. K.Flay-Giver (#16)
4. AJR/Rivers Cuomo-Sober Up (#6)
3. Missio-Everybody Gets High (#8)
2. Sir Sly-&Run (#3)
1. Arcade Fire-Creature Comfort (#1) (2)

Welcome to the Alt-(1)8:
No debuts this week on the show part 1-8 or in the airplay combined 9-18, but a rejoin has been spotted. Awolnation-Passion has returned to the Alt-(1)8 and I hope it gets higher, maybe even to #1.

Notes:
With no debuts comes big drops and big jumps. Sofi Tukker had their #1 hopes dashed when Best Friend dropped 6 spots. Same with Yungblud, as I Love You, Will You Marry Me dropped a whopping 11 spots. And Bastille-World Gone Mad? It went from #5 to goodbye.

Talk about big jumps. K.Flay's Giver got an 11 spot jump that is well overdue, and how about St. Vincent? That's a jump of 12 spots! Has to be the biggest jump in quite some time, maybe all time.

Missio is trying to cap off an insane 2017 if Everybody Gets High can tie the fastest run to #1, with current #1 Creature Comfort holding that record at 3 weeks.

So, my guess is this will play out in two scenarios. Either next week will be the final Alt-(1)8 and there will be the two specials (Year-end and In-studio), or we have two Alt-(1)8's left and a year-end. I don't know if the year-end length will still be 36, but check back next week and I might have an update.

My Top 5:

Alt-(1)8 Week of 12/2/17 (Arcade Fire)

Finally it's December, and as we get closer to end, it's safe to say that I have been listening to some Christmas channels on SiriusXM. The one I listen to a lot is Holly, but Holiday Traditions and Navidad are also pretty good. There are a few others as well, so go check them out.

Dropouts:
Franz Ferdinand-Always Ascending (#18)
Royal Blood-I Only Lie When I Love You (#17)

The Alt-(1)8:
18. St. Vincent-Los Ageless (#8)
17. Walk the Moon-One Foot (#15)
16. K.Flay-Giver (#14)
15. Beck-Up All Night (#13)
14. The Killers-Run For Cover (#12)
13. Portugal. The Man-Live in the Moment (#16)
12. Alice Merton-No Roots (#5)
11. Two Feet-Go Fuck Yourself (#10)
10. Manchester Orchestra-The Gold (#9)
9. Foster the People-Sit Next to Me (#7)
8. Missio-Everybody Gets High (DEBUT)
7. Nothing but Thieves-Sorry (#4)
6. AJR/Rivers Cuomo-Sober Up (REJOIN)
5. Bastille-World Gone Mad (#6)
4. Yungblud-I Love You, Will You Marry Me (#11)
3. Sir Sly-&Run (#1)
2. Sofi Tukker/Nervo/The Knocks/Alisa Ueno-Best Friend (#2)
1. Arcade Fire-Creature Comfort (#3) (New #1)

Welcome to the Alt-(1)8:
One debut and a rejoin this week. The debut comes from new 2017 established powerhouse Missio who brings Everybody Gets High, the third song from the Loner to appear on the Alt-(1)8. Bit surprising that this song leap frogged all the way to 8 right out of the gate. The song is not as good as Missio's other two entries, but it has some unique sounds and brings back some dubstep. Everybody Gets High talks about someone who is heavily addicted to drugs and alcohol after being alone while suffering from abuse from family and friends. Bit depressing if you ask me, especially coming up on Holiday season. Don't rule out a future #1 run for this song.

The rejoin is Sober Up from AJR and Rivers Cuomo of Weezer. Kinda figured this would sneak back in after being 8 for a week, then out for two weeks. Also surprising that it rejoined at 6.

Notes:
Two songs took some big drops. So much for Alice Merton trying to get to #1 after a 7 spot drop. And what happened to St. Vincent, dropping 10 spots just barely making the Alt-(1)8.

With big drops come big jump. Did not think that Yungblud would storm all the way to #4! Now I Love You, Will You Marry Me could make a run for #1!

Nothing but Thieves is slowly falling out of the ranked part of the countdown. Did you know if the Alt-(1)8 was judged only on Airplay, Sorry would be the #1 song the past few weeks.

Perhaps the biggest shock comes from Arcade Fire. Congrats to them for overtaking Sir Sly-&Run and now Creature Comfort is the top song! This is the fastest ascension on the Alt-(1)8 in history. How long will they be at #1? Will Sofi Tukker get over the hurdle? Rising Yungblud? What about Bastille? Find out... possibly in 2018.

On Tuesday, Walk the Moon made a visit to the studio for a session. Take a listen to it on-demand and you'll find out the story of the album What If Nothing, the challenge to top Shut Up & Dance's success, and more from the members. They will also perform Kamikaze, One Foot, Surrender, and a cover of Alanis Morissette's Hand in My Pocket.

Alt-(1)8 Week of 11/25/17 (Sir Sly (4))

Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving! Now that the holiday season has come upon us, we are approaching the home stretch of 2017. Pretty soon, we will have the year end special up, but I do not know if it will be 36 songs or some other number.

Dropouts:
Mansionair-Astronaut (Something About Your Love) (#18)
Bleachers-I Miss Those Days (#16)

The Alt-(1)8:
18. Franz Ferdinand-Always Ascending (#17)

15. Walk the Moon-One Foot (#12)

2. Sofi Tukker/Nervo/The Knocks/Alisa Ueno-Best Friend (#2)
1. Sir Sly-&Run (#1) (4)

Welcome to the Alt-(1)8:
1 debut and a re-entry this week. Our re-entry is Royal Blood's I Only Lie When I Love You. Good thing that this is getting a second chance here. Royal Blood is very underrated.

Our debut is the latest Critical Cut, and I'm wondering how this song got on the playlist. This is Two Feet's Go Fuck Yourself (seriously that is the real name). This simply sounds like drunk garbage. How in the world did this get past the studio? Has to be the worst song to ever rank in the Alt-(1)8 in quite a long time.

Notes:
I thought this new concept would rid the one and done. Yet this is the second week that we have had  two of them. Hope Astronaut (Something About Your Love) and I Miss Those Days re-enters soon.

Great week for St. Vincent, with Los Ageless jumping 7 spots to #8. This is what I was looking forward to.

Sir Sly has swept November with &Run. Could be making a late run for the song of the year (but I think the top spot is clinched though, that doesn't mean this could get a higher rank).

On Tuesday, Walk the Moon will be heading into the studio for a session. I think they did one not that long ago, so it's great that they have decided to drop by again.

Alt-(1)8 Week of 11/18/17 (Sir Sly (3))

If I can take something away from the new concept, it's that it has brought insanity to the countdown. Regardless of it being 8 or my custom made 18, we have seen stuff we were never used to before. Seven song turnover this week has to be a record. Oh and if you are keeping track, there really is a debut at #5!

Dropouts:
Bishop Briggs-Dream (#17)
Royal Blood-I Only Lie When I Love You (#15)
Vance Joy-Lay It On Me (#14)
The Lumineers-Angela (#13)
Banners-Someone to You (#12)
AJR/Rivers Cuomo-Sober Up (#8)
Awolnation-Passion (#7)

The Alt-(1)8:
18. Mansionair-Astronaut (Something About Your Love) (DEBUT)
17. Franz Ferdinand-Always Ascending (DEBUT)
16. Bleachers-I Miss Those Days (DEBUT)
15. St. Vincent-Los Ageless (#16)
14. K.Flay-Giver (RE-ENTRY)
13. Portugal. The Man-Live in the Moment (#2)
12. Walk the Moon-One Foot (#18)
11. Beck-Up All Night (#11)
10. Yungblud-I Love You, Will You Marry Me (#10)
9. Manchester Orchestra-The Gold (#3)
8. Arcade Fire-Creature Comfort (DEBUT)
7. The Killers-Run For Cover (RE-ENTRY)
6. Alice Merton-No Roots (#6)
5. Bastille-World Gone Mad (DEBUT)
4. Foster the People-Sit Next to Me (#9)
3. Nothing but Thieves-Sorry (#5)
2. Sofi Tukker/Nervo/The Knocks/Alisa Ueno-Best Friend (#4)
1. Sir Sly-&Run (#1) (3)

Welcome to the Alt-(1)8:
In what might be one of the craziest weeks ever witnessed here, we have 5 debuts and 2 re-entry's on my version of the Alt-(1)8. We'll start with the debut of Mansionair's Astronaut (Something About Your Love). Not the first time Mansionair has been on here, since they were with Odesza on Line of Sight. I like this song better than that since this one has more of a dance feel combining with the Alt and electric sounds heard in this. I wonder if this will be heard on other channels. Hopefully it will last longer.

The guys in Franz Ferdinand are back after 4 long years with Always Ascending. It starts slow, then after a minute, you will probably be dancing like crazy. Good luck trying to get this out of your head because it has been stuck in mine since its Advanced Placement. I do have to admit the lyrics do not make sense, but everything else sounds great. I would like to see this go top 8 soon.

We now have a second song from the Bleachers Gone Now album. Jack Antonoff brings the somber I Miss Those Days to the Alt-(1)8. You probably will think this is an uplifting song when you first hear it, but there is a tragic story behind this song. It actually is about the time in Jack's life before he lost his sister. I Miss Those Days shows how this has affected Antonoff's life and how is music has revolved around this. After finding that out, I hope this goes top 5 soon, maybe 1.

After missing the inaugural week of the new concept, K.Flay will give Giver a second go on the Alt-(1)8 (bad pun).

Arcade Fire brings a really strong debut on the Alt-(1)8 with Creature Comfort. I still like Everything Now better, but this has a different feel to what I am used to Arcade Fire. It sounds like a suicidal song with a bunch of threats and stereotypes. There are a lot of mentions of cutting yourself and make it painless. This is probably a good time to mention if you are feeling suicidal, you are not alone. Feel free to call the suicide hotline at 1-800-273-8255 (it is not just a Logic song). It might be the best decision of your life.

Apparently, one week without the Killers is too much, so Run For Cover is back at #7 on a second chance.

And last we have the strongest debut ever. Bastille brings World Gone Mad from the Bright soundtrack. This song is about how politically we have all become and how volatile the world has been since the Wild World album. You could also compare it to a Coldplay song for how slow it is and the use of strings. I am very surprised that this song that came out last week debuted all the way at #5. That being said, it would be nice if it goes #1.

Notes:
7 songs leaving us has to be a record. Amongst that group includes two one and dones (Angela and Sober Up) and Passion. Hopefully we'll see those on here again soon.

Last Week, Live in the Moment and The Gold were 2 and 3. On the 8, they dropped out, but here, they survived, but the Gold dropped 6 spots and Live in the Moment took an 11 spot hit!

Walk the Moon rebounded from last week's awful drop with a 6 spot jump. I think they will be in the studio for a session. Details will come when I get them.

It is evident that Sofi Tukker has a real chance for a #1 spot. Sure helps that Best Friend is all over TV since it is in the iPhone commercial.

Just for extra, with airplay taking 9-18, the one song per artist/band limit has been lifted. Although we have not needed to use it this week or last week, it might be needed in the future (Hint: Our super annoying song from the summer might make a return because of this rule). Also if there is no top 8 in the event that a festival for example is happening, then all 18 songs will be determined by airplay.

On a serious note, please pray for Madison as she is taking some time off due to physical and mental conditions. She will probably be back on Alt Nation and Lithium sometime in January.

Alt-(1)8 Week of 11/11/17 (Sir Sly (2))

To Alt Nation,

May I showing or motivated by sympathy, understanding and trait of being willing to give your money or time make a request or demand for the answer to my sentence of inquiry that asks for a reply: WTF R U DOIN?

If you didn't get the memo, Alt Nation has cut 10 songs off their main Alt-18 to create the new Alt-8. I don't know if the year end list is going to be shorter too, but this is not a good sign. I almost didn't want to post anymore, then I got an idea. I'm going to keep the Alt-18 going by making up #9-18 while going through with their already determined #1-8. Let's see how it goes. So remember, 1-8 is Alt Nation, 9-18 is my ranking.

Dropouts:
K.Flay-Giver (#15)
Thirty Seconds to Mars-Walk On Water (#14)
Francis & the Lights/Chance the Rapper-May I Have This Dance (#11)
The Killers-Run For Cover (#8)

The Alt-(1)8:
18. Walk the Moon-One Foot (#9)
17. Bishop Briggs-Dream (#17)
16. St. Vincent-Los Ageless (#18)
15. Royal Blood-I Only Lie When I Love You (#15)
14. Vance Joy-Lay It On Me (RE-ENTRY)
13. The Lumineers-Angela (DEBUT)
12. Banners-Someone to You (#13)
11. Beck-Up All Night (#10)
10. Yungblud-I Love You, Will You Marry Me (DEBUT)
9. Foster the People-Sit Next to Me (#5)
8. AJR/Rivers Cuomo-Sober Up (DEBUT)
7. Awolnation-Passion (#12)
6. Alice Merton-No Roots (#2)
5. Nothing but Thieves-Sorry (#4)
4. Sofi Tukker/Nervo/The Knocks/Alisa Ueno-Best Friend (#6)
3. Manchester Orchestra-The Gold (#3)
2. Portugal. The Man-Live in the Moment (#7)
1. Sir Sly-&Run (#1) (2)

Welcome to the Alt-(1)8:
3 Debuts and a Re-Entry on the first partially custom made Alt-(1)8. The re-entry is from Vance Joy's Lay It On Me which is going for round #2 on here. Let's see if it lasts longer than it did earlier.

The first debut has been a long time coming, it is Angela from the Lumineers. I like the nice soft rock that we have not had on here in some time. Angela is the third song from the Cleopatra album, but I think it is the second best on their (title track is #1 for me). I would hope it does well, but who knows what will happen now in this new era on the Alt-(1)8.

The second debut is from Yungblud, who Alt Nation has been featuring as another Critical Cut. He has what I think will be a flash mob song for marriage proposals, the aptly named I Love You, Will You Marry Me. This song is actually about graffiti not love. This one I hope will do better than the other two critical cuts before because ILYWYMM has a great chance to be legit and do well.

The third debut comes from AJR. Now you might be familiar with them from Hits 1, but this time they came over here and teamed up with Rivers Cuomo of Weezer to bring Sober Up. I don't think it is as good as the other two debuts, but it is decent enough to enjoy for a little bit. I think the message here is someone trying to help his addiction to drugs and alcohol. It debuted strong because of star power, so this could be a future #1.

Notes:
So the first week of this new method. Absolutely hate the 8 idea, but I hope this new concept I came up with will help bring it back. This also opens the door to complete randomness.

Bit surprised that one of the songs that didn't make the first ever 8 (or 18 mind you) is Run For Cover. I thought that would be a slam dunk to be here. It might be here next week though.

So much for Alice Merton's #1 case. I really wanted No Roots to climb the summit.

So Sir Sly-&Run will be a historic song, since it is the first to top this era of the Alt-(1)8.

Today is Veterans Day, so a big shoutout to all of our Veterans, past and present, that have served our country. We salute you.

Alt-18 Week of 11/4/17 (Sir Sly)

Well how about that World Series? That might have been one of the best series ever (especially games 2 & 5). Congratulations to the Houston Astros for winning their first Commissioner's Trophy! Seeing what Houston had to go through after the Hurricane, it was surely something special to see what went down in the playoffs.

Dropouts:
The Neighbourhood-24/7 (#18)
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (#17) (3)

The Alt-18 (with Annoying Madison):
18. St. Vincent-Los Ageless (DEBUT)
17. Bishop Briggs-Dream (#16)
16. Royal Blood-I Only Lie When I Love You (DEBUT)
15. K.Flay-Giver (#13)
14. Thirty Seconds to Mars-Walk on Water (#15)
13. Banners-Someone to You (#9)
12. Awolnation-Passion (#11)
11. Francis & the Lights/Chance the Rapper-May I Have This Dance (Remix) (#12)
10. Beck-Up All Night (#8)
9. Walk the Moon-One Foot (#7)
8. The Killers-Run for Cover (#10)
7. Portugal. The Man-Live in the Moment (#6)
6. Sofi Tukker/Nervo/The Knocks/Alisa Ueno-Best Friend (#14)
5. Foster the People-Sit Next to Me (#5)
4. Nothing but Thieves-Sorry (#4)
3. Manchester Orchestra-The Gold (#1)
2. Alice Merton-No Roots (#3)
1. Sir Sly-&Run (#2) (New #1)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
We have two debuts this week, the first is from XMU crossover St. Vincent. Los Ageless has been one of St. Vincent's best songs that I have heard in some time. Oddly, she had a song that was on Advanced Placement called New York a while back, so this is essentially the opposite of that song. It is about LA's obsession with youth and how everyone should stay young (it is evident in the video). St. Vincent had a previous song on here called Digital Witness, but that only lasted a week, so I hope this lasts well longer.

Royal Blood is back with I Only Lie When I Love You. The past three songs that Royal Blood have had failed to do well, but I think this will be the one that breaks out for them. I am hearing a lot of classic rock mixed in with modern sounds which is a great recipe for alt songs. The one thing I hope for is that voters will like this as much as I do. If so, then I smell breakthrough.

Notes:
You might have to get used to delayed posts such as this week and last week because of work and college.

I did not expect Sofi Tukker's Best Friend to be this high at all, let alone an 8 spot jump in only it's third week.

Banners has broke out of that 7-9 region, but not in a good way. Even after a music video release.

Congrats to Sir Sly for their first #1 song on the Alt-18 in 4 tries. &Run has dethroned Manchester Orchestra's the Gold! How long will it be at #1? Will Manchester Orchestra come back? How about either Alice Merton, Nothing but Thieves, Foster the People, or Sofi Tukker?

Alt-18 Week of 10/28/17 (Manchester Orchestra (4))

I am sorry that this post came out later than usual (I think I mentioned that last week). If this post looks rushed, it's because it is, and expect next week to be like that too.

Dropouts:
BØRNS-Faded Heart (#16)
The National-Day I Die (#15)
The Killers-The Man (#13) (6)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
We got three debuts this week, and we'll start with Bishop Briggs, who is coming to my neck of the woods soon. She brings her new song Dream, which is my new favorite from her. Dream sounds like a nice and mellow song very similar to a Lumineers song. Bishop Briggs mentioned that this song is about overcoming fears and embracing them. I want this song to do well and rise up soon.

Francis & the Lights make their Alt-18 debut with a remix of May I Have this Dance with Chance the Rapper. This one, like Line of Sight and Best Friend, also brings me back to the old Boombox Radio show. I was not a fan of this song at first, but it grew on me, and is now my favorite of the three debuts this week. It is a bit surprising to see a high debut for this which brings some potential for a big run.

The Killers bring another strong debut from the Wonderful Wonderful album, this one is Run For Cover. Comparing to The Man, Run for Cover sounds like just another Killers song, but they never disappoint me. This song mostly connects with all the madness that is going on right now. Brandon Flowers says that this song was originally meant for the Day & Age album, but it was not finished. Glad it came out now rather than never. Might be their second #1 from the same album eventually.

Notes:
Bit surprising that the National's Day I Die joins the one and done list this year, especially since it sounds better than System...

I think this is the highest Nothing but Thieves has ever gone on the Alt-18. Could Sorry be their first #1?

So much for a Thirty Seconds to Mars run (or in this case Walk) for a top spot.

On Monday, Alt Nation is doing the Emo-Halloweeno block again that will continue into Halloween on Tuesday. I'll try to work on making a comprehensive list like there was on the decades block from Labor Day, but if I can't, then you can listen to those songs on the Emo Project channel.

My Top 5:
Manchester Orchestra-The Gold
Alice Merton-No Roots
Banners-Someone to You
Francis & the Lights/Chance the Rapper-May I Have This Dance (Remix)
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea

Alt-18 Week of 10/21/17 (Manchester Orchestra (3))

This week was my fall break so I have been able to get caught up on classwork and studying for midterms. The fact that I found time to do this at my normal time is a miracle. It will not be the case next week though.

Dropouts:
Lo Moon-This Is It (#17)
Grouplove-Remember That Night (#14)
Alt J-Deadcrush (#13)

The Alt-18 (with Annoying Madison):
18. Sofi Tukker/Nervo/The Knocks/Alisa Ueno-Best Friend (DEBUT)
17. The Neighbourhood-24/7 (#16)
16. BØRNS-Faded Heart (#18)
15. The National-Day I Die (DEBUT)
14. Awolnation-Passion (DEBUT)
13. The Killers-The Man (#5)
12. K.Flay-Giver (#15)
11. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (#11)
10. Beck-Up All Night (#10)
9. Thirty Seconds to Mars-Walk on Water (#7)
8. Banners-Someone to You (#9)
7. Nothing but Thieves-Sorry (#12)
6. Portugal. The Man-Live in the Moment (#8)
5. Walk the Moon-One Foot (#6)
4. Foster the People-Sit Next to Me (#3)
3. Sir Sly-&Run (#4)
2. Alice Merton-No Roots (#2)
1. Manchester Orchestra-The Gold (#1) (3)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
Three debuts this week, and the first one is Best Friend from a collaboration of Sofi Tukker, Nervo, The Knocks, and Alisa Ueno. I'm going to simply say way too much is going on with this song. I get that sometimes this could be a great dance song, I just think it does not have the feel of an alt song. My guess is because four different artists or bands have influenced with this song. It's just way too much so moving on.

When the National brought SODITD I thought that would be hard for them to top that. Then Day I Die came along, and I was hooked on this song since the Sleep Well Beast album came out. This song mixes the emotional mess that people like Matt Berninger and I have gone through and has references a majority of past National songs. When listening through this album, this was my favorite song off it and might be the best that they came up with ever. I want this to be a top 5 song by late this year or early next year.

Awolnation is back and Passion is the lead single off the upcoming third album. I have not listened to Passion that much since it came out last week, but I think it is a well written piece by Aaron Bruno and company, and I think it could do very well. Might have a sneaky big jump so be prepared if it goes like 8 or higher next week. Not sure if it is #1 material but could be a top 5 or top 3 song soon.

Notes:
I should apologize to BØRNS and the readers, last week I wrote that BØRNS was a woman, when BØRNS is a guy named Garrett Clark Borns. I never watched any of his music videos (or many of the other Alt Nation bands videos as well) and was only listening to the Faded Heart and Electric Love. I am probably not the first to think BØRNS was a girl and I probably won't be the last. Sure hurts not doing research.

Big drop by the Killers. Probably a sign that we might get Run For Cover soon.

I'm a bit surprised the Neighbourhood has not done well with 24/7 yet. I thought that would be in the top 5 by now.

There are only 10 weeks left in the year. How many more #1's are we going to get between now and the year end post? Will there be a song other than Feel It Still that will be named the song of the year? The home stretch has come upon us.

My Top 5:
Manchester Orchestra-The Gold
Alice Merton-No Roots
Banners-Someone to You
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea
The National-Day I Die

Alt-18 Week of 10/14/17 (Manchester Orchestra (2))

My midterms are the next three weeks. So if my posts are a bit lacking today, next week, and after that, now you know.

Dropouts:
Odesza/Wynne/Mansionair-Line of Sight (#18)
Alex Lahey-Every Day's the Weekend (#17)

The Alt-18 (with Regan):
18. BØRNS-Faded Heart (DEBUT)
17. Lo Moon-This Is It (#16)
16. The Neighbourhood-24/7 (#12)
15. K.Flay-Giver (DEBUT)
14. Grouplove-Remember That Night (#15)
13. Alt J-Deadcrush (#14)
12. Nothing but Thieves-Sorry (#13)
11. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (#10)
10. Beck-Up All Night (#8)
9. Banners-Someone to You (#7)
8. Portugal. The Man-Live in the Moment (#9)
7. Thirty Seconds to Mars-Walk On Water (#5)
6. Walk the Moon-One Foot (#6)
5. The Killers-The Man (#4)
4. Sir Sly-&Run (#11)
3. Foster the People-Sit Next to Me (#3)
2. Alice Merton-No Roots (#2)
1. Manchester Orchestra-The Gold (#1) (2)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
2 debuts this week, and let's start with Borns' Faded Heart. I am going to guess you are familiar with her because of Electric Love from a couple years ago. Despite that not getting on the Alt-18, she breaks through with Faded Heart and I am enjoying this throwback sounding piece. It feels like this is a mix of a 60's song and now. Hoping that Faded Heart does well here.

K.Flay is back with Giver. I still enjoy Blood in the Cut slightly more but Giver is a major improvement over High Enough. The song sounds like she is trying to stay positive but she is falling apart because of influences around her. The first part of the song made me think I was listening to Arctic Monkeys-Do I Wanna Know. I think this has potential to go #1.

Notes:
Another one and done as Line of Sight is added to the list. This is now the 6th one and done since August. We did not have a single one this year before then.

Sir Sly has pulled off another big jump. &Run has sprinted 7 spots. Might be a contender for late bloomer.

Beck is over on the Spectrum premiering his long awaited album Colors. Head over if you want to learn about the songs on the album.

The top 3 remained unchanged this week. I do not know how many times that happened this year alone, but it feels like a lot.

My Top 5:
Manchester Orchestra-The Gold
Alice Merton-No Roots
Banners-Someone to You
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea

Alt-18 Week of 10/7/17 (Manchester Orchestra)

There was no way I was going to start this weekly recap without mentioning what happened in Las Vegas a few days ago. It is hard to believe that stuff like that is still going on around the world. My heart goes out to those people who innocently lost their lives and those who got injured at the festival. Sending prayers to those people and hoping that there is a way to prevent mass shootings like the other night from ever happening again.

Dropouts:
Brand New-Can't Get It Out (#18)
Atlas Genius-63 Days (#17)

The Alt-18:
18. Odesza/Wynne/Mansionair-Line of Sight (DEBUT)
17. Alex Lahey-Every Day's the Weekend (#14)
16. Lo Moon-This Is It (DEBUT)
15. Grouplove-Remember That Night (#16)
14. Alt J-Deadcrush (#13)
13. Nothing but Thieves-Sorry (#10)
12. The Neighbourhood-24/7 (#15)
11. Sir Sly-&Run (#12)
10. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (#5)
9. Portugal. The Man-Live in the Moment (#7)
8. Beck-Up All Night (#6)
7. Banners-Someone to You (#9)
6. Walk the Moon-One Foot (#8)
5. Thirty Seconds to Mars-Walk on Water (#11)
4. The Killers-The Man (#1)
3. Foster the People-Sit Next to Me (#4)
2. Alice Merton-No Roots (#2)
1. Manchester Orchestra-The Gold (#3) (New #1)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
2 Debuts this week, and let's start with the trio of Odesza, Wynne, and Mansionair. The three have collaborated to bring the uplifting Line of Sight onto the Alt-18. This song makes it feel like there is a lot going on and how you can find your way. It actually brought back memories from Boombox Radio (if you are new to the scene, Boombox Radio was an old weekend show where Liquid Todd played remixes of alternative songs or electric dance songs, there are two other songs outside of the Alt-18 that also do the same thing as Line of Sight). Odesza has been on here before a few years back, but I think this song will do better than Say My Name and maybe a surprising top song,

Let's slow things down with Lo Moon, who make their Alt-18 debut with This Is It. I think Regan has mentioned before of a Death Cab for Cutie connection to this band. I feel that This is It is very repetitive and eventually gets boring after a few listens. They actually say This Is It 24 times throughout this song so eventually it gets old. Would have preferred Loveless instead to chart on the Alt-18.

Notes:
Another one and done song has been added to the list as Brand New's Can't Get it Out is out after one week at 18. Really want this back on because this song is essentially describing what I'm going through now.

Probably at the end for Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea. Was a good run especially since it was on for 21 weeks and hit #1 three times.

Jared Leto of Thirty Seconds to Mars made a surprise visit to the studios and had an exclusive interview with Regan Thursday morning. He talked about the song Walk on Water and his new movie Blade Runner 2049 that just came out this weekend. Hope he brings the rest of the band together for a session soon.

Speaking of Thirty Seconds to Mars, they jumped up 6 spots this week and have finally made it to the top 5. Hoping this goes to #1 real soon.

Austin City Limits is going on right now, and the coverage is over at Jam On (Ch 29). Alt Nation did air Foster the People's set from last night, which was an inspiring setlist. They're going to re-air it soon so try to listen to it. Don't know if the coverage will continue into next weekend though.

We knew this day would somehow come, and it was today. Manchester Orchestra, the band behind the very first #1 on the Alt-18, has made their way back to the spot they originally owned. This time, The Gold is literally the Gold is stronger than the Man as the Gold takes the Gold Medal of the Alt-18 this week. How long will Manchester Orchestra stay at #1? Will Alice Merton, Foster the People, Thirty Seconds to Mars, or Walk the Moon make them have a short stay?

My Top 5:
Manchester Orchestra-The Gold
Alice Merton-No Roots
Thirty Seconds to Mars-Walk On Water
Banners-Someone to You
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea

Alt-18 Week of 9/30/17 (The Killers (6))

It's a bit crazy, but today is the 3/4 mark of 2017. This year has gone by insanely fast, and because it is Football season + playoff Baseball + plus fall leaves + plus Halloween + plus Black Friday Shopping Free for All Thanksgiving + plus Christmas + plus the Year End special post (which I promise will be a big one), this part of the year goes by the fastest.

Dropouts:
Moon Taxi-Two High (#18)
NoMBe-Freak Like Me (#13)
Bastille-Basket Case (#5)

The Alt-18 (with Annoying Madison):
18. Brand New-Can't Get it Out (DEBUT)
17. Atlas Genius-63 Days (#15)
16. Grouplove-Remember That Night (#9)
15. The Neighbourhood-24/7 (DEBUT)
14. Alex Lahey-Every Day's the Weekend (DEBUT)
13. Alt J-Deadcrush (#12)
12. Sir Sly-&Run (#14)
11. Thirty Seconds to Mars-Walk on Water (#7)
10. Nothing but Thieves-Sorry (#11)
9. Banners-Someone to You (#8)
8. Walk the Moon-One Foot (#16)
7. Portugal. The Man-Live in the Moment (#17)
6. Beck-Up All Night (#10)
5. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (#4)
4. Foster the People-Sit Next to Me (#6)
3. Manchester Orchestra-The Gold (#2)
2. Alice Merton-No Roots (#3)
1. The Killers-The Man (#1) (6)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
For the 5th time in 6 weeks, it's a 3 debut week. The first of the three comes from Brand New, who brings Can't Get It Out over here. Out of the three debuts, this one is my favorite since there is some signs of emo rock here. The song also connects me through the depressing themes and how we are all stuck in a never ending loop. I would hope this lasts much longer than I Am A Nightmare which only stayed for two weeks.

Another song that talks about the depression and never ending loop of time is from (no surprise) the Neighbourhood. I feel that 24/7 hits on everything that I mentioned in the review above. The only difference is that this is more focused on time and enjoying what we have left. You could also interpret it for someone who would always be there no matter what time it is. I don't know how well it could do, the older Neighbourhood songs all hit #1, but the ones off the album from 2015 clunked.

From one Critical Cut to another, we get Alex Lahey's Every Day's the Weekend. This song is very fast paced and very catchy right from the start. For this being her first song here, I'm looking forward to some great songs from Alex Lahey in the future. Really glad that Every Day's the Weekend got on the Alt-18 and I hope it makes a big run.

Notes:
For the second straight week, the #5 song has dropped out. I'm somewhat shocked that Bastille's cover of Basket Case is gone already after spending 4 out of 5 weeks overall in the top 5 but then again it was not played as much this week. Not good news for Missio since Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea which is currently the song that has spent the most weeks on the Alt-18 at 20.

Grouplove's Remember That Night took a 7 spot drop from its peak at #9. Didn't see that coming at all.

Two big jumps by bands that are well familiar to that term. Walk the Moon's One Foot jumped up 8 spots in its second week. You thought that was impressive, well think again. Portugal. The Man might have had the biggest jump of the year and maybe ever. Live in the Moment gained 10 positions! Does this story sound familiar? Remember Feel It Still had a big jump, then went top 3 the following week, then spent the next 12 weeks at #1. Not saying it's going to happen again but...

Really hoping that Alice Merton finds her way to #1 next week! Let this happen!

Meanwhile, the Killers are halfway there to Portugal. The Man's record for most weeks at #1. If they do it, they would tie it on 11/11, and break it on 11/18 if it was consecutive weeks.

Stat of the day: So far 94 songs have charted on the Alt-18 this year (which is 75% done). That's just one less than all of 2012.

Next two weekends is the final big festival of 2017, and that is the Austin City Limits Festival! I will post the Alt-18 Alums that will be performing there. I do not know if Alt Nation or some of the other channels like XMU or Spectrum are airing both, one, or neither of the weekends. Look on the bottom for who will be there (If there is a number, they are only performing that weekend only, otherwise it is both weekends.)

My Top 5:
The Killers-The Man
Alice Merton-No Roots
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea
Alex Lahey-Every Day's the Weekend
Brand New-Can't Get It Out
