Chester Bennington Tribute + Alt-18 Week of 7/22/17 (Portugal. The Man (11))

Man, this might be my hardest post ever. As you know this past Thursday, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park passed away at the age of 41. His voice was one of the most recognized not just in alt rock, but all of music. Linkin Park has been one of the top bands around since 2000. It's just shocking that Chester took his life when he had it all. They just released a new video just hours before the death confirmed, which Regan informed all of us the tragic news and played the song, Talking to Myself on Advanced Placement. Even though (shockingly) none of their songs made the Alt-18, I made my own Alt-18 composing of nothing but Linkin Park Songs in memory. This entire post is dedicated to Chester Bennington, we will miss you. 1976-2017 R.I.P. 😔😭

Now back to the show.

Dropouts:
Judah & the Lion-Suit & Jacket (#17)
The XX-I Dare You (#14)

The Alt-18 (with Annoying Madison):
18. Imagine Dragons-Thunder (DEBUT)
17. Declan McKenna-Humongous (#18)
16. The National-The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness (#15)
15. Muse-Dig Down (#9)
14. Glass Animals-Agnes (DEBUT)
13. Vance Joy-Lay It On Me (#16)
12. Phoenix-J Boy (#12)
11. Sylvan Esso-Die Young (#6)
10. Cage the Elephant-Whole Wide World (#11)
9. Arcade Fire-Everything Now (#8)
8. Queens of the Stone Age-The Way You Used to Do (#10)
7. Manchester Orchestra-The Gold (#13)
6. Foster the People-Doing It for the Money (#5)
5. The Killers-The Man (#7)
4. Sir Sly-High (#2)
3. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (#3)
2. Alt J-In Cold Blood (#4)
1. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (#1) (11)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
2 debuts this week, and the first comes from Imagine Dragons. Looks like Thunder will be the next mainstream success from Dan Reynolds and company. Thunder is a very electric song that will send chills through you. I think Believer was a song to give you momentum and Thunder is a song to keep it going. I think it will do very well, and unlike Believer, it will be #1.

Glass Animals brings a fourth song from the album How to Be A Human Being. This one is the closer, Agnes. The radio edit is better than the original album version because the 1st chorus is actually sung like the 2nd chorus unlike in the original it is hummed. This song sounds like a mix of Life Itself and Black Mambo and will be in your head like Pineapples from Pork Soda. I would like to see this song do well.

Notes:
Another big jump from Manchester Orchestra. It has climbed 18 -> 13 ->7 in a hurry. Future #1?

Speaking of Manchester Orchestra, they will in the studio for a session on Thursday. Be on the lookout. I think Madison also said that Cage the Elephant will also be there sometime.

Foster the People's new album, Sacred Heart Club, is out now. Haven't listened to it yet all the way, but I have heard of a few songs on there.

I've had enough. Feel It Still is now at 11 weeks at #1 (3 more than record), and while that is happening songs 2, 3, & 4 have swapped places the last 7 weeks. This has gotten so predictable that I might just not post until the year end. Seriously, can we cancel the remaining year and just cut right to the chase. Feel It Still will win song of the year (plus song of the summer and maybe in-studio session while we're at it.) We all know it will happen. 21 songs have dropped out of the Alt-18 since Feel It Still became #1. Is there anything else I need to know about it's dominance. If it feels weird, on my point scale, In Cold Blood has 4 more points than Feel It Still despite never hitting #1.

My Top 5:
Alt J-In Cold Blood
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea
Sir Sly-High
The Killers-The Man
Foster the People-Doing It for the Money
(Yes, I know these songs are 2-6. I will do this until Feel It Still is gone from the top)

My Alt-18 Linkin Park version:
18. Leave Out All the Rest (from Minutes to Midnight)
17. A Light That Never Comes (with Steve Aoki) (from Recharged)
16. Crawling (from Hybrid Theory)
15. One Step Closer (from Hybrid Theory)
14. Given Up (from Minutes to Midnight)
13. Bleed it Out (from Minutes to Midnight)
12. Shadow of the Day (from Minutes to Midnight)

1. In the End (from Hybrid Theory)

Alt-18 Week of 7/15/17 (Portugal. The Man (10))

Only now did I realized that there is a lightning bolt in the logo. Look between the L&T and you will see. It is more visible in Advanced Placement.

Dropouts:
Middle Kids-Edge of Town (#14)
Lorde-Perfect Places (#12)

The Alt-18 (with Annoying Madison):
18. Declan McKenna-Humongous (DEBUT)
17. Judah & the Lion-Suit & Jacket (#16)
16. Vance Joy-Lay It on Me (DEBUT)
15. The National-The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness (#17)
14. The XX-I Dare You (#15)
13. Manchester Orchestra-The Gold (#18)
12. Phoenix-J Boy (#11)
11. Cage the Elephant -Whole Wide World (#13)
10. Queens of the Stone Age-The Way You Used to Do (#9)
9. Muse-Dig Down (#8)
8. Arcade Fire-Everything Now (#10)
7. The Killers-The Man (#5)
6. Sylvan Esso-Die Young (#7)
5. Foster the People-Doing It for the Money (#6)
4. Alt J-In Cold Blood (#2)
3. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (#4)
2. Sir Sly-High (#3)
1. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (#1) (10)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
2 debuts this week, and the first comes from young Declan McKenna. Humongous is now his 4th song here on the Alt-18 and it is pretty good. This song could be as good as Brazil if the voters will let it. Humongous could rank in the top 5 soon.

Remember Vance Joy? He is back after a while. Lay It on Me was something I didn't expect to hear from him though. It feels much faster than Riptide and is not as catchy. Interesting though that he kept the acoustic vibe with this song. Looking forward to a new album by Vance Joy based on this leadoff single.

Notes:
Only two female singers here. We need more.

Great jump by Manchester Orchestra going up 5 in their second week.

Alt J does not have much juice left for a run. I blame Feel It Still.

Ok, seriously can any song dethrone Feel It Still? It has not spent 2/3 of its time at #1. I'm offering bribes.

This weekend, Alt Nation had a bunch of bands over for summer sessions. They are airing at the top of every hour. Here is what was played.

Bleachers: Let's Get Married, Rollercoaster, Dear Prudence (Beatles cover), Don't Take the Money
Portugal. The Man: Purple Yellow Red & Blue, So American, Feel It Still, So Young, Revolution (Beatles cover)
Alt J: 3WW, Dissolve Me, Dancing in the Moonlight (Toploader cover), In Cold Blood
Young the Giant: Amerika, Art Exhibit, Something to Believe In, Red Moon (The Walkmen cover)
Cold War Kids: So Tied Up, Love is Mystical, Oh! Darling (Beatles cover)

My Top 5:
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea
Alt J-In Cold Blood
The Killers-The Man
Manchester Orchestra-The Gold
The National-The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness

Alt-18 Week of 7/8/17 (Portugal. The Man (9))

For the first time ever, an Alt-18 occurs on my Birthday. The last time my birthday was on a Saturday  was 2006, three years before the Alt-18 existed. It's also Hits 1's Spyder Harrison's birthday today too! I feel old yet I'm only 20. Well... I'm older than my favorite hockey and soccer team (The Wild are only 17 and MNUFC just expanded.)

Dropouts:
Joywave-It's A Trip (#18)
Bleachers-Don't Take the Money (#16)

The Alt-18 (with Annoying Madison):
18. Manchester Orchestra-The Gold (DEBUT)
17. The National-The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness (#17)
16. Judah & the Lion-Suit & Jacket (#14)
15. The XX-I Dare You (DEBUT)
14. Middle Kids-Edge of Town (#9)
13. Cage the Elephant-Whole Wide World (#15)
12. Lorde-Perfect Places (#10)
11. Phoenix-J Boy (#12)
10. Arcade Fire-Everything Now (#11)
9. Queens of the Stone Age-The Way You Used to Do (#13)
8. Muse-Dig Down (#8)
7. Sylvan Esso-Die Young (#7)
6. Foster the People-Doing it for the Money (#6)
5. The Killers-The Man (#5)
4. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (#3)
3. Sir Sly-High (#4)
2. Alt J-In Cold Blood (#2)
1. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (#1) (9)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
2 Debuts this week, and the first comes from Manchester Orchestra. Andy Hull and company took a different approach to the Gold compared to the older stuff, and I like how this song turned out. It may not have the hard rock feel from songs like I've Got Friends, April Fool, and Top Notch, but I can enjoy this song while relaxing. If it debuted earlier, it would be a great summer song candidate. I still see this as a future top 5 song though.

Surprised the XX-I Dare You debuted really late, but it is finally here. If you liked On Hold from earlier this year, which was a #1 and a candidate for song of the year, you will like this song. This song sounds like some of the older XX songs which were more laid back, you could draw some parallels from I Dare You to Islands and maybe even Crystallized. This should be a #1 at some point.

Notes:
Madison accidentally said Phoenix did Everything Now not J Boy. Must've skipped a line since J Boy was 11 and Everything Now was 10.

Officially lost hope for a Middle Kids run. Hope they make the summer and year end lists.

Odd 6 of the top 8 songs stayed the same and essentially 3 and 4 switched.

We have a new record! Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still is now the all time Alt-18 record holder for most weeks ever at #1 with 9! The fact that this was all consecutive is even more impressive. I never thought I'd see the day, especially since it occurred on my birthday. They might go for 10 now! If you are Alt J or Sir Sly, you have to be sick since they were either 2, 3, or 4 during all 9 weeks of Portugal. The Man's reign. Does Ken Jennings have anything to do with this because if so, they will be #1 for a total of 74 weeks. Anyway, parade in Wasilla, Alaska anyone?

My Top 5:
Alt J-In Cold Blood
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea
The Killers-The Man
Arcade Fire-Everything Now
The XX-I Dare You

Alt-18 Week of 7/1/17 (Portugal. The Man (8))

Sorry this wasn't out at it's usual time. Especially now that I realize that this is a historic Alt-18!

Dropouts:
Waters-Hiccups (#14)

The Alt-18 (with Annoying Madison):
18. Joywave-It's A Trip (#17)
17. The National-The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness (#16)
16. Bleachers-Don't Take the Money (#13)
15. Cage the Elephant-Whole Wide World (DEBUT)
14. Judah & the Lion-Suit & Jacket (#10)
13. Queens of the Stone Age-The Way You Used to Do (#18)
12. Phoenix-J Boy (#8)
11. Arcade Fire-Everything Now (#15)
10. Lorde-Perfect Places (#11)
9. Middle Kids-Edge of Town (#6)
8. Muse-Dig Down (#9)
7. Sylvan Esso-Die Young (#12)
6. Foster the People-Doing It for the Money (#5)
5. The Killers-The Man (#7)
4. Sir Sly-High (#2)
3. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (#4)
2. Alt J-In Cold Blood (#3)
1. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (#1) (8)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
Just the one debut this week, but it is a big debut. Cage the Elephant is back with Whole Wide World. This was the first time I have heard this song, so I can't tell you much about it other than that it is better than anything on the Tell Me I'm Pretty album. It is still a far cry from the self titled and Thank You Happy Birthday albums, but I'd put it on pace with the songs on Melophobia. It will probably be a top 5 song soon.

Notes:
Is it me, or does anyone think that Madison is pushing Die Young up the Alt-18 just because it is her favorite? Radio was much better.

I have a feeling the Killers will be #1 sometime soon.

You can probably pull the plug on J Boy now, it will be gone soon. Probably the same can be said for Middle Kids' #1 chances.

In Cold Blood has been #2 for 7 of the past 9 weeks. For reference, Glass Animals-Life Itself last year spent 8 of 9 weeks last year at 2 but the other week was at #1.

Here is the reason. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still just broke the record for most consecutive weeks at #1 with 8. Feel It Still is also the 4th song to hit 8 weeks at #1, a rare list that included the last two year-end #1's. Two questions, will they break the record? And will they be song of the summer and/or the song of the year?

My Top 5:
Alt J-In Cold Blood
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea
The Killers-The Man
Middle Kids-Edge of Town
Arcade Fire-Everything Now

Alt-18 Week of 6/24/17 (Portugal. The Man (7))

Hard to believe that 2017 is halfway over. That went by fast. Look on the bottom for a progress report.

Dropouts:
Royal Blood-Lights Out (#18)
LCD Soundsystem-Call the Police (#12)

The Alt-18 (with Annoying Madison):
18. Queens of the Stone Age-The Way You Used to Do (DEBUT)
17. Joywave-It's A Trip! (DEBUT)
16. The National-The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness (#16)
15. Arcade Fire-Everything Now (#14)
14. Waters-Hiccups (#13)
13. Bleachers-Don't Take the Money (#15)
12. Sylvan Esso-Die Young (#17)
11. Lorde-Perfect Places (#11)
10. Judah & the Lion-Suit & Jacket (#10)
9. Muse-Dig Down (#5)
8. Phoenix-J Boy (#8)
7. The Killers-The Man (#9)
6. Middle Kids-Edge of Town (#6)
5. Foster the People-Doing it for the Money (#7)
4. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (#4)
3. Alt J-In Cold Blood (#2)
2. Sir Sly-High (#3)
1. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (#1) (7)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
2 Debuts this week, and the first comes from Queens of the Stone Age. Yes, they are back for the first time in  four years and they bring The Way You Used to Do to the Alt-18. I haven't listened to this song much, but it sounds like it has a little bit of QotSA major hits. I would not say that this is their best song, but it is not their worst either. It could do well, but I'm not sure.

Joywave is back on the Alt-18, and this time It's A Trip! Daniel puts his high pitched voice to good use in this song, probably a candidate for song of the summer. Would not recommend watching the video for It's A Trip. Might be a top 5 song here, maybe even a #1 in some time.

Notes:
Muse jumped 5 spots last week, and dropped 4 spots this week. Might be a rollercoaster ride for Dig Down.

Sylvan Esso shocked me a bit by jumping 5 spots this week.

I officially think that In Cold Blood might be one of the best songs that has never hit #1... yet.

SiriusXM is having a contest where you could win tickets to the Panorama Music Festival. Find out more here.

Alt Nation already declared Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still as Song of the Summer. I still think it's too early to call. Still, it is now a 7-time #1 and will have the opportunity to tie the record for most weeks at #1 next week. It could also break the record for most consecutive weeks at #1. The other 3 8 time #1's (Grouplove-Colours, Cold War Kids-First, Miike Snow-Genghis Khan) did it non-consecutively, and two of those songs topped the year end chart (hint, they are the last two years #1 songs)

Since we are at the half way point, I'll post what is probably Alt Nation's top 18 songs for the year... so far.

My Top 5:
Alt J-In Cold Blood
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea
Middle Kids-Edge of Town
The Killers-The Man
The National-The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness

What I think is Alt Nation's Alt-18 so far in 2017 (no order):
The XX-On Hold
Cold War Kids-Love is Mystical
Young the Giant-Silvertongue
Missio-Middle Fingers
Alt J-In Cold Blood
The Revivalists-Wish I Knew You
Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still
Imagine Dragons-Believer
Bastille-Send Them Off!
Marian Hill-Down
K.Flay-Blood in the Cut
Sir Sly-High
Bleachers-Don't Take the Money
Lorde-Green Light
Phoenix-J Boy
Foster the People-Doing It for the Money
Sylvan Esso-Radio
Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness-Fire Escape

Alt-18 Week of 6/17/17 (Portugal. The Man (6))

So the Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup (back to back) and the Golden State Warriors won the NBA Finals (2nd time in 3 years). Kinda predictable if you ask me. The only thing that wasn't predicted accurately was probably the Pens opponent, the Nashville Predators, going this far.

Dropouts:
Haim-Want You Back (#12)

The Alt-18 (hosted by Annoying Madison):
18. Royal Blood-Lights Out (#17)
17. Sylvan Esso-Die Young (#14)
16. The National-The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness (#18)
15. Bleachers-Don't Take the Money (#8)
14. Arcade Fire-Everything Now (#16)
13. Waters-Hiccups (#11)
12. LCD Soundsystem-Call the Police (#13)
11. Lorde-Perfect Places (#15)
10. Judah & the Lion-Suit & Jacket (#7)
9. The Killers-The Man (DEBUT)
8. Phoenix-J Boy (#5)
7. Foster the People-Doing It for the Money (#6)
6. Middle Kids-Edge of Town (#9)
5. Muse-Dig Down (#10)
4. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (#4)
3. Sir Sly-High (#3)
2. Alt J-In Cold Blood (#2)
1. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (#1) (6)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
Just the one debut, and it debuted pretty high. Two words will give you that reason, the Killers! Welcome back Brandon Flowers and company to the Alt-18. Their new song The Man is really worth listening too, then repeat on loop. It has a different approach from your typical Killers songs, but you will not want to stop listening to this. I'm actually a bit shocked that it debuted at #9 especially since it premiered Wednesday. What is even more shocking is that the Killers have never had a #1 on the Alt-18 (since all of their top hits came out before the Alt-18 was a thing). Can they get one with The Man?

Notes:
That Lorde concert from last night, wow! Please listen to it on-demand when you get the chance.

Speaking of Lorde, try to listen to Bleachers-Don't Take the Money and listen for her voice near the end of the song. She has backing vocals with Jack Antonoff.

Speaking of Bleachers, a drop of 7 spots. This is probably the last week for Don't Take the Money.

Speaking of 12 week songs, will Alt J-In Cold Blood ever crack #1? It has been #2 6 of the past 7 weeks.

Speaking of songs that have not hit #1, could Middle Kids pull a stunner and get there soon?

Speaking of... I'm finished. Well, 2 weeks until Portugal. The Man can attempt to tie the all time most weeks at #1, 3 weeks until they can try to break it (on my birthday?)

My Top 5:
Alt J-In Cold Blood
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea
Middle Kids-Edge of Town
The Killers-The Man
LCD Soundsystem-Call the Police

Alt-18 Week of 6/10/17 (Portugal. The Man (5))

Hi, you're on a blog floating in the internet. Pretty cool, huh? Some of it is alt-rock, actually most of it is alt rock. I can't even get from 18 to 1 without Alt Nation. It's sad. I'm sad. I miss you. How did this happen?

You probably know the reference from above since it is everyone's favorite video from the past month.

Dropouts:
Cold War Kids-Love is Mystical (#11) (4)

The Alt-18 (hosted by Annoying Madison):
18. The National-The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness (DEBUT)
17. Royal Blood-Lights Out (#15)
16. Arcade Fire-Everything Now (#18)
15. Lorde-Perfect Places (#17)
14. Sylvan Esso-Die Young (#16)
13. LCD Soundsystem-Call the Police (#14)
12. Haim-Want You Back (#13)
11. Waters-Hiccups (#10)
10. Muse-Dig Down (#9)
9. Middle Kids-Edge of Town (#8)
8. Bleachers-Don't Take the Money (#6)
7. Judah & the Lion-Suit & Jacket (#12)
6. Foster the People-Doing It for the Money (#5)
5. Phoenix-J Boy (#4)
4. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (#7)
3. Sir Sly-High (#2)
2. Alt J-In Cold Blood (#3)
1. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (#1) (5)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
Just the one debut this week, and it is awesome that the National are back. Secretly, I have been listening to them more often before their new song appeared here, and now that we have The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness, they might get their first #1 ever. I can sense a more positive vibe in Matt Berninger's voice here. I'll be listening to this song a lot this summer. Let's get this to #1.

Notes:
So long Love is Mystical. Just after I hear their Bonnaroo set, they have left the Alt-18.

One is not enough, could Missio have a second #1 soon? Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea is on the rise as of late.

Great resurgence for Suit & Jacket. I still think this will be a future #1.

Phoenix came into the studio to performed a brief session. You can get a chance to hear their early beginnings and the making of Ti Amo. They performed the album title track as well as the breakthrough 1901 and their current hit J Boy. I recommend listening to this on demand.

This upcoming Friday, Alt Nation is going to air a private concert from Lorde! Earlier this week there was a contest that would've sent you to New York to watch, but the deadline has passed. Fortunately, the concert will air at 9:00 (ET) Friday night.

My Top 5:
Alt J-In Cold Blood
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea
Judah & the Lion-Suit & Jacket
Middle Kids-Edge of Town
LCD Soundsystem-Call the Police

Alt-18 Week of 6/3/17 (Portugal. The Man (4))

Surprised that Alt Nation skipped over the Governors Ball festival, especially since they covered it the last two years. I'm pretty sure they will cover Bonnaroo next week though.

Dropouts:
Sundara Karma-She Said (#17)
Weezer-Feels Like Summer (#15)
Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness-So Close (#14)
Lorde-Green Light (#13)

The Alt-18 (hosted by Annoying Madison):
18. Arcade Fire-Everything Now (DEBUT)
17. Lorde-Perfect Places (DEBUT)
16. Sylvan Esso-Die Young (#18)
15. Royal Blood-Lights Out (RE-ENTRY)
14. LCD Soundsystem-Call the Police (#16)
13. Haim-Want You Back (DEBUT)
12. Judah & the Lion-Suit & Jacket (#12)
11. Cold War Kids-Love is Mystical (#10)
10. Waters-Hiccups (#11)
9. Muse-Dig Down (#8)
8. Middle Kids-Edge of Town (#7)
7. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (#9)
6. Bleachers-Don't Take the Money (#6)
5. Foster the People-Doing It for the Money (#5)
4. Phoenix-J Boy (#4)
3. Alt J-In Cold Blood (#2)
2. Sir Sly-High (#3)
1. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (#1) (4)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
3 Debuts and 1 Re-entry this week. Let's start with the two (yes, two) Advanced Placement carryovers from this week. Arcade Fire is finally back after four years and they bring the really catchy Everything Now onto the Alt-18. Even though the song just came out Thursday, I have a feeling I heard it somewhere else like in a commercial or something. I actually think it sounds like an elevator song that never leaves your head. We will be hearing this song a lot this summer.

Lorde replaced herself this week and brings Perfect Places onto the Alt-18 this week. I have not listened to this song much yet, but I don't think it's as good as Green Light was. I'm a bit surprised it debuted already. Probably because Melodrama comes out in two weeks. Knowing Lorde it will probably get into the top 5.

Royal Blood-Lights Out will have a second go on the Alt-18.

Can't believe I nearly forgot about the Haim sisters. Guess they Want You Back (awful pun). I have a feeling this song will lead Haim to another big breakthrough, and maybe into many Top 40 stations like Hits 1. This band is underrated and needs to have their time in the spotlight. This song is just as good as The Wire and that caught fire. Want You Back may be their first #1 here soon.

Notes:
Madison made an error about Waters-Hiccups. It has been on for 6 weeks, not 10.

Could Sir Sly make an unexpected run to #1? That song is getting higher every week (even worse pun).

This Wednesday, Phoenix is coming into the Alt Nation studios for an in-studio session just in time for their new album Ti Amo.

Alt J is over on XMU previewing the new album Relaxer. Hear them all weekend.

If Feel It Still is #1 again next week, then it would have been ranked at #1 for exactly half of the time it has been on the Alt-18.

My Top 5:
Alt J-In Cold Blood
Phoenix-J Boy
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea
Middle Kids-Edge of Town
LCD Soundsystem-Call the Police

Alt-18 Week of 5/27/17 (Portugal. The Man (3))

Alt Nation gave us a special treat this Memorial Day Weekend by covering the Bottlerock festival in Napa Valley, CA. Haven't listened to it yet, but I will after this.

Dropouts:
Royal Blood-Lights Out (#17)
K.Flay-High Enough (#16)

The Alt-18 (hosted by Annoying Madison):
18. Sylvan Esso-Die Young (DEBUT)
17. Sundara Karma-She Said (#13)
16. LCD Soundsystem-Call the Police (DEBUT)
15. Weezer-Feels Like Summer (#18)
14. Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness-So Close (#15)
13. Lorde-Green Light (#9)
12. Judah & the Lion-Suit & Jacket (#8)
11. Waters-Hiccups (#11)
10. Cold War Kids-Love Is Mystical (#5)
9. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (#14)
8. Muse-Dig Down (#12)
7. Middle Kids-Edge of Town (#10)
6. Bleachers-Don't Take the Money (#7)
5. Foster the People-Doing It for the Money (#6)
4. Phoenix-J Boy (#4)
3. Sir Sly-High (#3)
2. Alt J-In Cold Blood (#2)
1. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (#1) (3)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
2 debuts from XMU carryovers. We'll start with Die Young from Sylvan Esso. This song is not as good as Radio and there really is not much energy in this song at all. It is almost like Die Young barely made the cut for the What Now album. That being said I do not think it will be as successful as Radio was on the Alt-18.

LCD Soundsystem is finally back and they have brought an epic song to the Alt-18. Call the Police may be one of their best songs ever. Even though I have not heard this song much, I have been rocking out to it whenever it comes on. I think it will do well here, hopefully at least a top 5 spot. I do warn, this song is really long.

Notes:
I do apologize, but this will be short since I am on my way back from vacation.

With Love is Mystical dropping, we'll probably be getting So Tied Up on here soon.

Is In Cold Blood Life Itself #2? It has spent 4 weeks straight at #2.

We're entering peak festival season. Bottlerock this week followed by Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, and Firefly the next 3 weeks.

My Top 5:
Alt J-In Cold Blood
Phoenix-J Boy
Middle Kids-Edge of Town
Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea

Alt-18 Week of 5/20/17 (Portugal. The Man (2))

This has been a hard week for all of us, as we lost Chris Cornell a few days ago. His voice was one of the most recognizable in Alt rock and he was one of the best singers of the 90's with Soundgarden. He was also part of Audioslave and Temple of the Dog. We are going to miss you Chris. I dedicate this Alt-18 to him.

Dropouts:
Coin-I Don't Wanna Dance (#17)
Spoon-Hot Thoughts (#15)
The Revivalists-Wish I Knew You (#13) (1)
Bastille-Blame (#9)
Missio-Middle Fingers (#6) (1)

The Alt-18 (hosted by Annoying Madison):
18. Weezer-Feels Like Summer (DEBUT)
17. Royal Blood-Lights Out (#18)
16. K.Flay-High Enough (RE-ENTRY)
15. Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness-So Close (DEBUT)
14. Missio-Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea (DEBUT)
13. Sundara Karma-She Said (#16)
12. Muse-Dig Down (DEBUT)
11. Waters-Hiccups (#11)
10. Middle Kids-Edge of Town (#14)
9. Lorde-Green Light (#12)
8. Judah & the Lion-Suit & Jacket (#8)
7. Bleachers-Don't Take the Money (#10)
6. Foster the People-Doing It for the Money (#7)
5. Cold War Kids-Love is Mystical (#3)
4. Phoenix-J Boy (#5)
3. Sir Sly-High (#4)
2. Alt J-In Cold Blood (#2)
1. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (#1) (1)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
Four debuts and a Re-Entry, so a lot of writing this week. Let's start with another big summer song that is literally screaming it Feels Like Summer, Weezer's Feels Like Summer. While I see this song doing good on here, it does not measure anywhere near past Weezer songs. It is for sure better than Beverly Hills, but I will still listen to older songs from them this summer (like Island in the Sun)

K.Flay brings High Enough back to the Alt-18. Like Blood in the Cut, she hopes it goes from re-entry to #1.

Andrew McMahon is back with So Close. This is now the second song off the album Zombies on Broadway to hit here after Fire Escape. So Close is now my new favorite song from Andrew McMahon. I don't know about you, but it is catchy right away, and you will be dancing by the time he says So Close. I hope more people listen to Andrew McMahon because he is really taking off over here.

Missio has replaced themselves this week. While we throw the Middle Finger at Middle Fingers, we enter the Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea. This has a little less energy than Middle Fingers, but is still very much enjoyable. It's great that Missio will not be a one-time great here now that they brought another song on the Alt-18. Not sure if this will be a future #1, but I think it will be close.

We welcome back the kings of the Alt-18, Muse! Dig Down is now their record breaking eleventh song to chart on the Alt-18 as it joins the Advanced Placement/Alt-18 double up group. This song will really tear at your soul with it's rhythmic vibe. I wasn't much a fan of it during my first listen, but I'm liking it a little more each time I listen to it. It might be a future #1 soon, so we'll see how high it goes.

Notes:
So we lost two former #1's and lost two songs pretty high. Pretty surprised that Bastille-Blame dropped at its peak position.

Middle Kids was on SiriusXMU doing a session. Check them out on-demand.

This might be a record for least songs dropping on the Alt-18, Love is Mystical was the only red song on the Alt-18.

Yikes, Annoying Madison sung briefly on the Alt-18. We all knew that would happen some day.

I wonder if Sir Sly could make a sneaky run to the top soon.

Alt-18 Week of 5/13/17 (Portugal. The Man)

So I have decided to take a little break, and stop posting on Tuesdays and Thursdays. So for now, the blog will revert back to how it was last year (except for no giant list on the left).

Dropouts:
K.Flay-High Enough (#17)
Imagine Dragons-Believer (#11)
Gorillaz/Jehnny Beth-We Got the Power (#9)

The Alt-18 (hosted by Regan):
18. Royal Blood-Lights Out (#18)
17. Coin-I Don't Wanna Dance (#16)
16. Sundara Karma-She Said (#15)
15. Spoon-Hot Thoughts (#14)
14. Middle Kids-Edge of Town (DEBUT)
13. The Revivalists-Wish I Knew You (#8)
12. Lorde-Green Light (#4)
11. Waters-Hiccups (RE-ENTRY)
10. Bleachers-Don't Take the Money (#10)
9. Bastille-Blame (#12)
8. Judah & the Lion-Suit & Jacket (DEBUT)
7. Foster the People-Doing it for the Money (#6)
6. Missio-Middle Fingers (#5)
5. Phoenix-J Boy (#7)
4. Sir Sly-High (#13)
3. Cold War Kids-Love is Mystical (#1)
2. Alt J-In Cold Blood (#2)
1. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (#3) (New #1)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
Two debuts and a Re-entry this week, and this debut is going to be a big summer song. Middle Kids crossover from XMU to make their Alt-18 debut with Edge of Town. This song has been a favorite of mine and I'm a bit surprised they debuted that high since they are a newcomer. Also, when you think this song is over, it all of a sudden speeds up and gets really exciting. I really hope this band finds their way to the top.

A bit stunning, Waters brings Hiccups back at a much higher position than before.

Perhaps even more stunning is this. I'm putting a Song of the Year alert on Judah & the Lion-Suit & Jacket. This song just tied the record for highest debut ever on the Alt-18 (Cold War Kids-First was the other one, and all it did was tie the record for most weeks at #1 with 8, and was song of the year in 2015.) Suit & Jacket is my life right now, seeing how we are all growing old too quickly and I'm just trying to plan a future. I bet if my friends heard this song, they would say the same thing. This better be #1 only because Take It All Back didn't get there and Suit & Jacket is more deserving.

Notes:
Sir Sly... wow! This is now the second time in three weeks a song jumped 9 spots. I should have seen this coming because they did a jump of 7 spots with You Haunt Me a few years ago.

Surprised Regan didn't even mention Suit & Jacket's high debut. At least he mentioned Sir Sly's big jump.

Guess we have to give Lorde the red light now. (awful pun)

So far, this may have been one of my favorite Alt-18's ever. After all that madness, we culminate with a new #1! Portugal. The Man, I'm not kidding you, was #17 three weeks ago. Feel It Still is now the #1 song, in what could be the biggest three week jump ever. Congratulations to Portugal. The Man for their very first #1! How long will they be here? Will Alt J get to them? Sir Sly? Phoenix?

Next weekend is another big festival, Hangout! I'm pretty sure Alt Nation is going to cover most of the acts, and there will probably be a schedule out soon. Here is the lineup!

Alt-18 acts at Hangout: Mumford & Sons, Twenty One Pilots, Phoenix, Weezer, MGMT, The Head & the Heart, Franz Ferdinand, Local Natives, The Strumbellas, Cherub, Bob Moses, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, Mutemath, Bishop Briggs, Lewis Del Mar, LP, Coin, Mondo Cozmo, 888, Missio, and The Heydaze.

Alt-18 Week of 5/6/17 (Cold War Kids (4))

Today is the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby, so let's see how the Alternative equivalent went.

Dropouts:
Waters-Hiccups (#15)
Marian Hill-Down (#14)

The Alt-18:
18. Royal Blood-Lights Out (DEBUT)
17. K.Flay-High Enough (#17)
16. Coin-I Don't Wanna Dance (#18)
15. Sundara Karma-She Said (DEBUT)
14. Spoon-Hot Thoughts (#16)

7. Phoenix-J Boy (#11)
6. Foster the People-Doing it for the Money (#10)
5. Missio-Middle Fingers (#3)
4. Lorde-Green Light (#2)
3. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (#8)
2. Alt J-In Cold Blood (#4)
1. Cold War Kids-Love is Mystical (#1) (4)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
Kinda in a hurry here, so this will be short. 2 debuts this week and let's start with Royal Blood. I'm currently digging Lights Out and it sounds like a throwback alt song. I probably would say the same with all of their songs since they sound the same. Their other two songs haven't lasted long here, so I'm hoping Lights Out bucks trend.

Fresh off the Advanced Placement tour, Sundara Karma makes their Alt-18 debut with She Said. Quite frankly this band should've debuted last year with Loveblood, but She Said was worth the extra months. This song is easily catchy and will be a big hit this summer on the Alt-18. Might be a #1 soon.

Notes:
Imagine Dragons and the Revivalists are probably on the way out. I think they debuted the same week too.

Phoenix and Foster the People are storming up pretty fast. When will they be 1 and 2.

Portugal. The Man has jumped a combined 14 spots in two weeks! That has to be a record.

The Advanced Placement tour is over. Thank you so much to everyone who attended.

I talked about this on Thursday, but there is now an Emo channel on SiriusXM, check it out!

Alt-18 Week of 4/29/17 (Cold War Kids (3))

Just so you know this is the last Alt-18 that will be all blue for this year. I'll have everything switched back to normal by Tuesday's Airplay Radar post. Also, I'm pretty sure Madison is now going to be host from now on, so it is only a matter of time until she starts singing.

Dropouts:
Glass Animals-Pork Soda (#9)
The XX-On Hold (#7) (5)

The Alt-18:
18. Coin-I Don't Wanna Dance (#16)
17. K.Flay-High Enough (#15)

15. Waters-Hiccups (#18)

12. Bastille-Blame (#12)
11. Phoenix-J Boy (DEBUT)
10. Foster the People-Doing It for the Money (DEBUT)
9. Gorillaz/Jehnny Beth-We Got the Power (#10)
8. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (#17)
7. Bleachers-Don't Take the Money (#8)
6. The Revivalists-Wish I Knew You (#4)
5. Imagine Dragons-Believer (#3)
4. Alt J-In Cold Blood (#5)
3. Missio-Middle Fingers (#2)
2. Lorde-Green Light (#6)
1. Cold War Kids-Love is Mystical (#1) (3)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
Two debuts from the bands that got me into Alt Nation. First, Phoenix has made their triumphant return with J Boy. Phoenix has yet to dissapoint me and they brought another great song to the Alt-18. I haven't heard it enough to write an all-out opinion, but enough to put it in a good spot on my personal rankings. This could be a #1 unless...

The other debut comes from the band that is the one that really lured me into Alt Nation, Foster the People! Finally they are back after three long years and they have brought Doing it for the Money on the Alt-18 (Now watch me get this confused with Bleachers-Don't Take the Money sometime soon). Like Phoenix, they are constantly giving me music that I have enjoyed since all the way back to Pumped Up Kicks (in 2010, not 2011 unless you are a Hits 1 person.) Foster the People changed up their sounds for DIFTM though, as it does sound more of an R&B song, but then again none of their albums had a constant genre. Torches was more Alt-Rock, Supermodel was more Alt-Pop, and now their new album III is more Alt-R&B. DIFTM is not there best song, but it will be a force on the Alt-18 for weeks to come.

Notes:
Hold, on while I catch my breathe after what is an insane Alt-18 *breathes* done.

So, after 17 weeks, the last song from 2016 drops out (On Hold). I think this is also the first time since 2012 that two top half dropouts occur.

Like Madison said, we need to talk about Portugal. The Man. A 9 spot jump in an instant. *mic drop heard all the way from Alaska*.

I think we can get rid of Down now. It's getting pretty old at least to my standard.

I have a feeling that it is not a matter of if, but when Lorde & Alt J top the Alt-18 soon.

The Advanced Placement tour is nearing the end with Missio, 888, Coast Modern, and Sundara Karma. They're in San Diego tonight, then they wrap up the tour in Phoenix, Austin, Dallas, and Houston.

My Top 5:
Lorde-Green Light
Missio-Middle Fingers
Alt J-In Cold Blood
Bleachers-Don't Take the Money

Alt-18 Week of 4/22/17 (Cold War Kids (2))

Annoying Madison is here again since I guess Regan is still at Coachella (seriously hoping this does not become permanent.)

Dropouts:
Saint Motel-Born Again (#18)
Misterwives-Machine (#17)
Young the Giant-Silvertongue (#12) (3)

The Alt-18:
18. Waters-Hiccups (DEBUT)
17. Portugal. The Man-Feel It Still (#16)
16. Coin-I Don't Wanna Dance (#15)
15. K.Flay-High Enough (DEBUT)
14. Sir Sly-High (DEBUT)
13. Marian Hill-Down (#9)
12. Bastille-Blame (#14)
11. Spoon-Hot Thoughts (#13)
10. Gorillaz/Jehnny Beth-We Got the Power (#8)
9. Glass Animals-Pork Soda (#10)
8. Bleachers-Don't Take the Money (#11)
7. The XX-On Hold (#3)
6. Lorde-Green Light (#6)
5. Alt J-In Cold Blood (#7)
4. The Revivalists-Wish I Knew You (#2)
3. Imagine Dragons-Believer (#5)
2. Missio-Middle Fingers (#4)
1. Cold War Kids-Love is Mystical (#1) (2)

Welcome to the Alt-18:
3 Debuts this week, and we will start with Waters. Hiccups is their second song to appear on the Alt-18 following Got to My Head a few years ago (remember that song?). I think this song is probably right at that level and it could go higher to one of my favorites. Listening to the chorus, you might get some laughs in it though. It makes no sense and I'm wondering where that came up when they wrote it. This could go top 5, but I don't think it will get there.

K.Flay brings High Enough to the Alt-18, and clearly this is a step backward from Blood in the Cut. This song is way to slow, is lacking the energy, and sounds more like CHVRCHES than K.Flay. She didn't even do this, or Black Wave, during the session, which tells you that she has better songs on her new album than this one. I would rather have Hollywood Forever or You Felt Right on here instead.

During the same week High Enough debuts, Sir Sly brings High on the Alt-18. I totally forgot Sir Sly and this is their reminder that they are still around. This is a really good song that they made and I think it should go in the middle of the three songs they have had here (better than Gold, not as good as You Haunt Me). I think this could be in the top 3 soon. Anyway, this is going to be a big summer song.

Notes:
Only one song left from 2016 (On Hold). It should be out soon, and probably I Dare You will replace it.

I really hope that In Cold Blood makes it to #1. Like High, it is showing signs of being a big summer song.

Coin FINALLY released the album that has Talk Too Much on it. How Will You Know If You Never Try also has I Don't Wanna Dance, Malibu 1992, and Boyfriend.

Gorillaz releases their giant album, Humanz, next week. It's 26 tracks long! (That is if you get the Deluxe album)

Advanced Placement tour is heading west now as we are at the final two weeks of the tour with Missio, 888, Coast Modern, and Sundara Karma. Tonight, they head to one of my favorite cities (even though I never been there) Salt Lake City! (I hope the Studio C cast watches this show since they are in nearby Provo). Then they will hit the Golden State with shows in San Francisco, Sacramento, LA, and San Diego.

My Top 5:
Missio-Middle Fingers
The Revivalists-Wish I Knew You
Alt J-In Cold Blood
Bleachers-Don't Take the Money
Spoon-Hot Thoughts
